As part of that project, a number of shirts donned during Barcelona’s derby date with Catalan neighbours Espanyol were made available to the public. Live bidding ran through to January 19, with Yamal’s No.19 jersey proving to be the most popular.
The 17-year-old forward’s top eventually went for £27,142. The shirt worn by Polish striker Robert Lewandowski in a game that Barcelona won 3-1 raised £14,233. Those numbers are impressive, but are dwarfed by record deals involving Ballon d’Or winners Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi boasts the record sale for MatchWornShirt at €55,019, with the Argentine filling six of the top 10 spots. Ronaldo’s highest-grossing jersey stands at €45,012, with Chelsea star Cole Palmer (€41,127 for the shirt he scored four first-half goals in against Brighton) and Real Madrid ‘Galactico’ Kylian Mbappe (€35,748) also figuring prominently.
